Embracing 2023 and all that is and will go well!
How do you define things as “going well”? Take a moment to think about this. Then I encourage you to pause and reflect on it so you can write down three things that have already gone well today. Think micro and macro.
An example of something going well might be, “I didn’t get any junk mail in my snail mail box today” or “The rain brought some beautiful flowers to the trees out front”.
For some of you, you may need to identify what is something that might not go well and ask yourself what would the opposite of that look like? For example, “it would really hurt if my plastic toothbrush broke inside my mouth while brushing, but it didn’t so brushing my teeth went really well!”
Perhaps this is a very easy exercise for you. If so, do you take time to consciously practice it? I do this every morning in the form of a gratitude practice. Right before I look at my calendar for the day, I write out three things for which I am grateful. This practice has helped me go from an Eeyore mentality of “it’ll never work” to hopeful and thankful.
I have been doing this for a very long time and at first was surprised at the impact it had on me. Now, if there are a couple days which pass and I have forgotten to do it, I notice the difference. I definitely have a more negative outlook on those days.
And nothing works better than when we make a plan, follow it, and create some accountability for it. So, when in the day would it be best for you to allow this space for pause, reflection, and writing? Great. Now, set this time aside and savor it. Make it part of your schedule and commit to it for at least 21 days. Once you have a nice routine of identifying what is going well for you, I invite you to pause again and notice any kind of shift as a result of this focus and write about it for just a few minutes and then share your experience with someone you trust. May your wellness form within you!
In solidarity and with love,
